Question: In order for neurons to hold information, there would have to be something like a code made from neurons, but there is nothing in the brain to detect that code, because the brain is all neurons. How could codes uncode other codes? J.P. : care to explain? How could neurons hold information if there wasn't some sort of code created by neuronal connections? J.P.: wha? That is literally one of the most assine statements you've ever said, and that's BAD considering it's you. -------------- Information does not require a code. All that is required for information is computation, and all computation requires is an entropic gradient. --------------------- "J.P.: wha?" Hence my initial statement. You clearly are clueless when it comes to the following fields: Information Theory Information Science Theory of Computation -- Neural Network Topography (subset of above) -- Turing Equivalence (subset of above) Computational Structures Thermodynamics -- Computational Thermodynamics Biology -- Neurology (subset of the above) Physical Chemistry Electronics (necessary for building and understanding proper bio-neural models). In short, the question you've asked requires a multi-disciplinary response but you've never shown the slightest understanding of even ONE of those fields, let alone have a grasp of multiples, let further alone have some grasp (however tenuous) of all of them. The question you ask is based on false assumptions and it took me four years of pre-college studies and six years of college (BS Computer Science, BA in Psychology, with an emphasis on cognitive algorithms in neural networks) to even be able to realize that you are absolutely clueless because of your erroneous assumptions. Neurons have receptors that are stimulated by the presence of specific molecules released from neighboring neurons. They have organelles(subcomponents) which react to the presence of specific proteins produced when certain outside stimuli triggers them. Also a more temporary way of storing info is in "ion channels" were ions are separated by pumps on the neuron's surface and have a voltage potential between them. The polarities can be reversed, giving them a similar property to binary switches like in your computer, but not quite as effective in storing complex info. No one knows in exact detail how info is coded, but this is about as far as we've gotten. @J.P., I don't have a background in neuroscience, but I do think it's fair to assume that info is coded in the sense that in order for it to be stored by something that doesn't have all the properties of the medium in which information travels, it must be represented symbolically and be processed systematically. Also you need representations of patterns, not just individual occurrences of info.

Let me get this straight...is this another one of those "I don't get it, therefore God?" questions? Please do a little reading on basic neurobiology and the workings of the mind before you ask questions like this. It does not behoove you to ask questions you have no background in at all. For starters, the brain is made up of TWO types of cells- neurons and glial cells. Not to mention the vascular network interwoven throughout.
